Wherein Our Heroes receive, in error, and read on-air, several letters destined for The North Pole. John Terry’s next move is discussed, Mesut Özil’s status as the best playmaker in the Premier League is contested, and the MLS Cup Final is previewed. We echo a Christmas Wish to have Joey Barton land at a new club in January. Also, we share in the outpouring of grief and heartbreak for the victims of the recent aviation tragedy in Colombia.

Wherein Our Heroes lament Canada’s ineptitude at painting lines on football pitches, get excited for BBC’s forthcoming behind-the-scenes look at the goings-on at Watford F.C., and ridicule Cristiano Ronaldo’s feeble attempt at masquerade during a recent visit to Disneyland Paris. Two students spend a lovely evening camped out in the loo at Old Trafford, Firmino’s haircut gets all the praise, and football-related arrests are on the rise. We also commend our Japanese hosts for providing us a little taste of home when we traversed The Land of the Rising Sun…potato salad. Ride it!

Wherein Our Heroes make your ears feel just right through sweet podcast poetry. FIFA opens disciplinary action against the FA’s of England and Scotland for donning “political” symbols, while the World Football Museum in Zürich struggles for attendees. Super sub Olivier Giroud’s mane finally gets the recognition it deserves, Yaya Touré bags a brace for Manchester City after months away from the pitch, and a trifecta of England players get up to no good during the International Break. Also, we gear up for the MLS Conference Finals. Awe yeahhhhhhhh...

Wherein Our Heroes engage in copious amounts of Irreverence: Anthony Stokes garners an illustrious Joey Barton Award for pleading guilty to assaulting an Elvis impersonator, Usain Bolt decides to train with Borussia Dortmund, Víctor Valdés is praised for his moxie for taking on Tinder, Cristiano Ronaldo sports faux specs and provokes the ire of his club, and four Manchester United rebels earn Haircut of the Week for ensuring their tufts are in order before the big match. Also, we offer a musical surprise, Adam gets a NES Classic, and The Gaffers add to their ever-growing list of (empty?) promises.

Wherein Our Heroes bask in the glory of having a Canadian MLS team guaranteed a spot in the MLS Cup Final. We preview both Conference Finals, are not having Giovinco’s snub for league MVP, and extol both Liverpool and Chelsea for their deserved spots at the top of the Premier League table. Long-time listeners Brendan and Luke weigh in on recent topics and we salute Philippe Coutinho’s well-groomed dome in Haircut of the Week. Also, we wish Wayne Bridge good luck in his latest foray in the jungles of Australia and, keeping with tradition, we spoil Westworld’s most popular fan theory.

Wherein Our Heroes are haunted by Manchester United’s zombie-like ineptitude in front of goal, some West Ham supporters make our skin crawl, and FIFA’s cobbled-together attempt at rebranding their year-end awards is like Dr. Frankenstein’s ghoulish creation. The MLS playoffs are in full swing, with away sides in the first leg looking like lifeless corpses. Also, Adam spoils all of your favourite movies and TV shows…the horror!

Wherein Our Heroes express their desire to procure Petr Cech’s latest designer headwear, celebrate the very first green card awarded in Serie B, and discuss PSG’s latest big signings (aka their eSports team). Chelsea simply decimate Manchester United on Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, The Special One has some choice words for Antonio Conte post-match, and Zlatan still finds time to flash his pearly whites despite it all. Also, we get whimsical thinking about the days of getting cussed out in Spanish by whippersnappers.

Wherein Our Heroes offer up their renditions of “She Drives Me Crazy” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, all the while weighing in on hard-hitting and topical football news. Drogba refuses to be named to the Impact’s match day roster, two South African players engage in rampant Kasi Flava, and Mike Dean turns in a typical on-field performance. Enner Valencia’s Barton Award is pending further developments, Pep Guardiola doesn’t believe the Premier League is any more intense than La Liga, the Bundesliga, or Serie A, and we solicit your feedback on Wales’ spate of bizarre team photos. Also, Adam receives a Red Dwarf casting lesson.

Wherein Our Heroes reveal Norwegian pleas to procure the best semen in the world, the Top 10 reasons Bob Bradley is set to succeed at Swans, and Kyle Walker’s assertion that England didn’t have a back-up plan at Euro 2016. Speaking of, we are havin’ the assertion that England are the most overrated nation in world football. Also, in a Canadian Moment, Victor Montagliani posits that awarding the World Cup to both Russia and Qatar was the “best thing that happened in football”.

Wherein Our Heroes perform the first Quadruple Segment for your auditory pleasure as Sam Allardyce can’t save his job with England. West Ham are in a world of hurt after yet another abysmal performance, with crowd noise being pumped through the PA at London Stadium to bolster the atmosphere and late-night tomfoolery rampant among the players. Atlanta United FC secure a manager with arguably the most impressive curriculum vitae in MLS. Also, Jamie Vardy’s pre-match diet is pretty much disgusting.

Wherein Our Heroes are simply shocked at the omission of Iceland and the Viking Clap from FIFA 17. We carefully appraise the merits of gaffers singling out their players in the media and aren’t havin’ it. Manchester United’s woes continue; is it the low work rate, players in unfamiliar roles, or blind devotion to aging stars? Landon Donovan is the next to live “The Great American Sports Comeback”. Also, Joey Barton FINALLY wins his eponymous award and joins the ranks of “The Joseph Anthony Barton Highfaluting Gentlemen’s Club”.

Wherein Our Heroes delve into the mailbag and produce a glorious rant of epic proportions from Brendan. Benito Floro and Canada Soccer decide to consciously uncouple, we wonder if Canadian players are getting their fair shake in the MLS, and London Stadium sees trouble both on and off the pitch (Payet’s Rabona notwithstanding). Also, José Mourinho yet again fails to pip Pep.

Wherein Our Heroes share their knowledge of Canadian civic nomenclature, Team Canada fail to qualify for the “Hex”, and our dreams of seeing the Maple Leaf at a FIFA World Cup must wait another several years. We are havin’ Megan Rapinoe’s right to take a knee during the Star Spangled Banner, Leicester players choose to differentiate their four-wheeled gifts, and England’s players need a weekend at a Tony Robbins symposium – Big Sam clearly needs more time. Also, we offer a post-mortem on the Bachelor in Paradise finale.

Wherein Our Heroes dip into the Mailbag to discuss the Premier League’s TV deal as well as German last names. Jason recounts his experience at BC Place in Vancouver Whitecaps’ recent CONCACAF Champions League encounter with Sporting KC, Montreal Impact finally vanquish their BMO Field demons in a hotly contested 401 Derby, and the future looks bright for Team Canada heading beyond qualifying for Russia 2018. CD Leganés offer gourds to visiting clubs this La Liga season, while their shirts are part gimmick and part sensory wonder. Also, Marouane Fellaini becomes the first two-time Haircut of the Week winner for selflessness and chivalry during Manchester United’s clash with Hull City A.F.C.

Wherein Our Heroes bask in the glory of several early-season Premier League matches. Spurs vanquish Crystal Palace with Harry Kane oddly stationed as a Number 10. Will the arrival of Christian Benteke herald a change in recent fortunes for The Eagles? Elsewhere, Burnley see off Liverpool with only 19% possession, Ronald Koeman earns his first victory as Everton manager, and Hull, with merely a baker’s dozen senior players in the squad, earn their second victory in as many matches. We are having Steve Bruce’s departure in the summer, and Michy Batshuayi’s treble tarantula earns Haircut of The Week. Also, our Canadian Women’s Team is saluted for another outstanding Olympics in Rio.

Wherein Our Heroes are joined by guests Joe and Greg to wax philosophical on the Premier League season to be. Together, we engage in the most profound punditry in the Northern Hemisphere, including but not limited to, our top 7/8 picks in the table, Pep Guardiola’s first season in England, where Leicester might finish, whether or not Paul Pogba is worth his transfer fee, and Big Sam’s propensity for steering England to glory. Also, we drink a LOT.

Wherein Our Heroes believe the Community Shield was more of the same from Manchester United and Leicester. José Mourinho picks up where he left off with Juan Mata, West Ham can't give simple directions, and Jamie Vardy can't care for four-legged friends (or can he?). Riyad Mahrez pays West London a visit, Kyle Lafferty pays for visiting his bookie, and our Canadian Women enjoy another milestone moment in Rio. Also, we aim to patent our new football matching app...stay tuned!

Mark Clattenburg gets an early nod for worst tattoos of the year, Will Ferrell throws his hat in the ring for the Jamie Vardy biopic (long shot), and Zlatan quits Manchester United’s hotel. We are both having more CanCon in MLS. Also, Hull City’s Tigers, a veritable cat of only nine tails, get trolled by their own players. Come on you Hoops!

Wherein Our Heroes bask in the glory of Calgary Foothills FC’s path to being crowned PDL Western Conference Champions. We hope the ride isn’t done, that Russo continues to dominate the scoresheet, the backline stands tall like the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains, and the formations flow like the mighty Bow River. Tommy Wheeldon Jr. receives Haircut of the Week in recognition of his building something amazing for sport in the city while maintaining a convertible-friendly coif. It’s MLS All Star “break", which means we unpack the pros and cons of the annual mid-season showcase. We’re not havin’ it! Also, the bell has finally tolled for Sigi Schmid at Seattle Sounders.

Wherein Our Heroes celebrate our 50th episode and thank all the denizens of Gafferonia for your support over the past year. We are very happy to be joined by Ottawa Fury FC head coach and general manager, Paul Dalglish. Paul began his playing career with Newcastle United in 1997; after his time in England, he went on to play in both Scotland and North America, winning the MLS Cup with Houston Dynamo in 2006 and 2007. Paul started his coaching journey in 2008 and won the PDL Championship with Austin Aztex in 2013. Paul was hired by Ottawa in November of 2015. In our conversation, Paul offers insights on management, player development, and what the rest of the fall NASL season may hold for Ottawa Fury FC.

Jul 12, 2016

Wherein Our Heroes recap Europe’s quadrennial showcase by offering kudos to Portugal and their yeoman-like effort in both the group stages and the Euro 2016 Final. Ronaldo’s tears turn from those of desolation to cocky joy; does this give him a leg up on Messi? Did France’s best show up for the ultimate match after carrying a whole nation on their epaulets? We salute the young players who turned heads, Ricardo Quaresma’s olive branch haircut, and the Irish supporters who brought the craic in droves. Also, we continue to question whether the 24-team format adds anything other than too many draws.

Wherein Our Heroes offer a proliferation of wonders concerning UEFA’s quadrennial showcase. Was Puma’s yarn really defective, or was this a ploy to get the French in the book? Does L'Équipe need to back off in their criticism of Les Bleus? Joachim Löw blames “adrenaline and concentration” on a double scratch ’n sniff, we are definitely not having the violence that has marred the group stage, and Croatia’s midfield shows it can keep pace with Spain’s best. Also, we’ll be at The Ship & Anchor Pub on June 26 – don’t miss it!
